We’d like to congratulate our managing director Alan O’Leary, who celebrates 10 years at the helm of Kievits Kroon this year.Mr O’Leary joined the hotel in April 2002 at the age of 27, when it was a struggling 70 room property and has turned it into a successful, award-winning hotel.Today the hotel is known for its outstanding amenities and excellent service from a team of dedicated staff.O’Leary recalls that one of the highlights of his tenureship was the addition of 42 rooms to the hotel to accommodate the 2010 World Cup Soccer referees for six weeks.“As a result we can now compete with the bigger accommodation establishments in Gauteng,“ he says.“Kievits Kroon has become a successful, well known brand that we can build on. We have a number of exciting projects in the pipeline which will definitely keep me busy for the foreseeable future.”O’Leary was born and educated in Ireland. In 1996 he obtained his diploma in Hotel Management from the Shannon College of Hotel Management. He is currently doing his MBA through the British-based Henley Management College and aims to complete it this year.He started in the hospitality industry with Forte Hotels, moving on to the DeVere Hotel in Blackpool as food and beverage manager, then moved to Fuller Smith & Turner as hotel manager. After five years he quit his job, took a two month break and came to Africa to climb Mt Kilimanjaro.“I’ve always been extremely fond of South Africa, having spent a number of holidays in Cape Town. So when the opportunity to join Kievits Kroon presented itself, I grabbed it with both hands.”O’Leary is a keen sportsman and has a passion for mountain climbing. He has successfully summitted Kilimanjaro (2002), Mt Elbrus in the Caucasus mountains, Russia (2005), Guagua Pichincha and Mt Cotopaxi in the Andes (2007), and Mt Cayambe in Ecuador in the Andes (2008).In 2011 he attempted to climb Mt Aconcagua in order to raise funds for Leeuwfontein Primary School, Kievits Kroon’s nominated charity. You are invited to an art exhibition
|
Five contemporary artists from the Pretoria region have been invited to participate in an exhibition at Kieivts Kroon Country Estate in August. The exhibition, entitled “Between Storms” is a collaboration between two Pretoria art galleries, Platform on 18th and Front Room Art.Kievits Kroon has, for the past couple of years, exhibited art from these galleries in its 41 Library Bar and Granita Signature Restaurant. This will be the estate’s first fully curated exhibition and is the first collaboration between the two galleries.Jennifer Snyman of Front Room Art said that the artists were selected because their styles and techniques complement and enhance each other. They are Diek Grobler, Retha Buitendach, Louise Barnard, Wayne Vivier and Karin Smith.Christo Harvey of Platform on 18th said the brief is based on a saying in the African American churches which says: “We are always either leaving a storm, heading into a storm or in the middle of a storm.”He believes most people will be able to relate to this theme. “We all know what it’s like to deal with adversity, or face ‘storms’”, he said. The exhibition opens on Sunday 5 August and will run for three weeks. |
Making a difference in our community

They also supplied a lunch of hotdogs, chips and cool drinks to the pupils.Kievits Kroon’s CSI programmes support the development of underprivileged and disadvantaged children in our community. You can help us to help them by making a donation to the Kievits Kroon Trust. Kievits Kroon’s veggie garden
|
Our veggie garden, planted at the end of summer, is coming on beautifully, reports Stephane Bodenstein, Kievits Kroon’s resident landscaper.“We’ve already harvested chilly peppers, green onions, chives, celery, spinach, beetroot, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage,” says Stephane. The veggies are grown for our very own restaurant, Granita, where Head Chef Sammy Mashile loves to use the freshest available produce!”We are doing it the organic way,” explains Stephane. “We water the garden using a separate borehole, and we don’t use any pesticides. We use an effective micro–organism to treat and feed the young plants, and we use natural sprays like garlic to help us combat various diseases and pests, including aphids, cabbage moth, caterpillars and snails.“We also make use of our own organic compost made from all the waste materials from the gardens of the estate. I would also like to start companion planting, which involves planting different vegetables and herbs together to assist in pest control and pollination.” Stephane works with a team of 10 gardeners, led by Dolf Minnaar. They are: Back Row (left to right) Peter Mentoor, Dolf Minnaar, Laurens Ledwaba (Supervisor), Mackdonald Motshabane and Andries Lebelo. Front Row – Oupa Maila, Albert Mahlangu, Collin Manyali (Brushcutter Operator)and Flippie Minnaar. Off sick – Joseph Kekana (Brushcutter Operator) |
